Hi , welcome to our STRONG Foundations (Strong Steps – we’ve had a name change) guided program where you’ll learn the skills and techniques to keep you strong in the coming months and years. Over the next eight weeks we’ll progressively roll out key exercise and essential movement information with your workouts, building each week with more moves and intensity.
Our focus is to introduce and establish correct movement patterns that become habits to empower and strengthen you in your everyday life. You may be new or it’s been a while since you’ve undertaken any fitness to strengthen your body, so we can’t emphasise enough the importance of starting your fitness journey the right way, so you progress well and finish strong. Whilst occasionally you may be keen to race ahead, we want to keep you safe and establish habits that become lifestyle changes of incorporating strength training into your everyday routine.
Over the coming weeks we’ll progressively introduce our eleven key movement patterns that we all perform in everyday life, such as carrying, pushing, bending and twisting. For you it may look like carrying groceries, pushing a wheelbarrow, bending to pick up a heavy bag or twisting around an obstacle to grab something deep in a closet. We do them without thinking, so when we don’t have a strong and stable body, or have poor technique, we heighten the chances of injury. Additionally, as we age, adding load or weight to wrong movement patterns can cause injury. Interestingly, it takes at least a thousand movements the RIGHT way to counteract all the times you’ve done it wrongly, so let’s take the time and get it right.
So as you start out, we encourage you to stick with light weights until you’re confident with form and fitness level. Many workouts can drain you, requiring exertion until you’re totally exhausted and losing form, but we want you to take down the intensity or lighter weights and maintain good form so that the correct muscle movement chains are enhanced.
It’s REALLY important to avoid pain as this indicates a problem with the movement and we’ll address this further in week 1 foundations.
